We Believe...

  • The curriculum you choose is just as important as the program that implements it.
  • The program curriculum and its implementation will determine the quality of care your infant or toddler receives.

Our Curriculum Philosophy

Supporting Healthy Development for Infants and Toddlers

As a PITC inspired program we also utilize the PITC curriculum philosophy and approach.

Enhancing our relationship-based, responsive approach to early care promoted by the Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC), the curriculum planning tools and strategies support the efforts of our infant teachers to facilitate high-quality individualized learning and healthy development.

Unique to the PITC Curriculum is a planning process based on reflection, observation, and documentation of play and learning that respects each child's developing abilities, individual strengths and needs, family culture(s), and language(s).

This planning process helps teachers deepen understanding, share meaning, support learning, and strengthen meaningful, caring relationships with infants and toddlers.

Our goal is to develop the crucial importance of giving tender, loving care and assisting in your infants' intellectual development through an attentive reading of cues.

Our teachers will connect with each family to develop a responsive, relationship-based, interactive care that supports each infant and toddler's family and culture.

Our teachers study the infants in our care, reflect on and record information about their interests and skills, and search for ways to set the stage for the next learning encounters.

Our curriculum uses a carefully designed process of learning through discovery called active participatory learning. During active learning, infants and toddlers learn about the world around them by exploring and playing.

Our trained staff address skills and behaviors at each stage of development based upon six program policies that anchor our work: primary care, small groups, continuity, individualized care, cultural responsiveness and inclusion of children with special needs.

This philosophy creates a climate for care that reinforces our responsive and relationship-based approach. It allows relationships to develop and deepen over time between care teachers and infants, as well as between care teachers and the families.

Music & Meaningful Connection

Focus Areas

Music • Movement • Language

In January, our curriculum invites infants into a gentle exploration of music, movement, and language, using shared care routines and playful experiences to support early development. Through our theme of Music and the calming color blue, teachers create a nurturing environment where rhythm, sound, and relationship come together.

This month’s featured story, The Songbird Who Could Not Sing, helps infants explore concepts of sound, difference, and belonging. Teachers intentionally model language throughout the day—verbalizing actions during care routines and play—so infants can begin to connect words with experiences. This approach supports early communication, trust, and a sense of shared meaning.

Our curriculum focuses on key developmental areas aligned with the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP), including fine and gross motor skills, classification, number sense, and attention maintenance. Activities such as sensory bins with birdseed and feathers, birdwatching with binoculars, sorting materials, and music-based social experiences are thoughtfully designed to engage infants’ curiosity and growing abilities.

Throughout the month, teachers observe and document each child’s unique growth, ensuring care and learning are responsive, intentional, and deeply connected. At Rise and Shine, we believe that when language turns care into connection, infants feel safe, seen, and ready to learn.

Featured Learning Activities

  • Sensory Exploration: Songbird Sensory Bin — discovering the five senses
  • Cognitive Discovery: Bird watching — observing movement, cause and effect, and the world around them
  • Motor Development: Sorting — engaging hands, fingers, and whole-body movement
  • Social & Emotional Growth: Music - Featured Song: The Songbird Who Could Not Sing!

Developmental Framework

This month integrates DRDP-aligned goals and PITC-inspired routines to nurture confidence, curiosity, connection, and meaningful communication.
