We Believe...

  • The curriculum you choose is just as important as the program that implements it.
  • The program curriculum and its implementation will determine the quality of care your infant or toddler receives.

Our Curriculum Philosophy

Supporting Healthy Development for Infants and Toddlers

As a PITC inspired program we also utilize the PITC curriculum philosophy and approach.

Enhancing our relationship-based, responsive approach to early care promoted by the Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC), the curriculum planning tools and strategies support the efforts of our infant teachers to facilitate high-quality individualized learning and healthy development.

Unique to the PITC Curriculum is a planning process based on reflection, observation, and documentation of play and learning that respects each child's developing abilities, individual strengths and needs, family culture(s), and language(s).

This planning process helps teachers deepen understanding, share meaning, support learning, and strengthen meaningful, caring relationships with infants and toddlers.

Our goal is to develop the crucial importance of giving tender, loving care and assisting in your infants' intellectual development through an attentive reading of cues.

Our teachers will connect with each family to develop a responsive, relationship-based, interactive care that supports each infant and toddler's family and culture.

Our teachers study the infants in our care, reflect on and record information about their interests and skills, and search for ways to set the stage for the next learning encounters.

Our curriculum uses a carefully designed process of learning through discovery called active participatory learning. During active learning, infants and toddlers learn about the world around them by exploring and playing.

Our trained staff address skills and behaviors at each stage of development based upon six program policies that anchor our work: primary care, small groups, continuity, individualized care, cultural responsiveness and inclusion of children with special needs.

This philosophy creates a climate for care that reinforces our responsive and relationship-based approach. It allows relationships to develop and deepen over time between care teachers and infants, as well as between care teachers and the families.

Theme: “Don’t Play in the Mud”

At Rise and Shine Child Care Centers, we believe in the power of nature for child development. This month, we are diving into sensory play focused on mud, fostering curiosity and exploration through hands-on activities.

🎨 Featured Color: Brown

We’ll explore the color brown through natural materials like mud, rocks, and earth-inspired play.

🌟 Developmental Focus Areas

Our activities are intentionally designed to support growth in:

  • Peer Interaction & Social Understanding
  • Identity of Self
  • Fine Motor Development
  • Empathy & Emotional Awareness
  • Early Number Sense

We are especially focusing on encouraging kindness and empathy — helping children learn how to comfort a friend, share space, and express emotions in healthy ways.

🧼 Teacher Routine Focus: Handwashing

Because mud play can get messy (in the best way!), we will be emphasizing proper handwashing routines. This supports independence, hygiene, and healthy habits.

🗣️ Language Development

We continue building vocabulary in:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Baby Sign Language

Featured words this month:

  • Love
  • Play
  • Happy
  • Thank you

Teachers will intentionally model language during daily care routines, narrating actions and encouraging children to communicate in ways that feel natural and culturally respectful.

🎨 Featured Activities

🌈 Sensory & Creative Expression

  • Mud Kitchen Exploration
  • Strawberry Rocks Discovery
  • Exploring our five senses through texture and touch

🖐️ Motor Development

  • Digging with shovels
  • Strengthening hands and fingers through scooping, pouring, and manipulating natural materials

❤️ Social & Emotional Growth

  • Learning about “All About Me”
  • Practicing empathy — comforting a friend who feels sad
  • Building connection through shared play

We look forward to a month filled with joyful exploration, meaningful connections, and muddy discoveries! 🌿
